Strut Bar / Strut Brace

Strut Bar / Strut Brace

Strut bar deem to be one of the most common car modification by all drivers, but how well you know on the actual function of strut bars?

Both Front Strut Bar and Rear Strut Bar are mainly the most common strut bars available in the aftermarket. In general, the car’s chassis is supported by the wheels and suspensions which mean that the impact and shock force during driving is to be transmitted and absorb by the suspension. However, the impact will not be fully absorbed by the suspension as commonly general car’s chassis are usually not strong enough. In such situation, the common issue that would arise would be chassis flex. Applying the concept into situation of when the car entering corner, due to the weight transfer chassis flex will then occur if the cassis is not strong enough.

Function of strut bars will particularly become more significant in car with a MacPherson strut suspension system. With MacPherson strut suspension system where the spring and shock absorber are combined in the one suspension unit, the entire vertical suspension load is transmitted to the top of the vehicle's strut tower, unlike a double wishbone suspension where the spring and shock absorber may share the load separately. Hence, the strut bars which connect the strut tower can significantly improve suspension efficiency by reducing the strut tower flex. This transmits the load of each strut tower during cornering which ties the two towers together and reduces chassis flex. To accomplish this effectively, the bar must be rigid throughout its length (2 point strut bar) and it's even more effective if it is attached to the firewall of the car (3 point strut bar).

In Malaysia's aftermarket, one of the favorite aftermarket Strut Bar by the car enthusiast would undoubtedly Ultra Racing. The products are generally available in various car tuning and accessories workshop. It's time to get your car the Strut Bars to enhance the thrill of driving!
